ضعف الانتصاب خاصة واضطرابات الاداء الجنسي عامة اكثر شيوعا بكثير مما كنا نعتقد سابقا. ففي دراسة اجريت في العام 1994 من اجل فحص الحالة الصحية لدى الرجال البالغين في ولاية ماساتشوستس، في الولايات المتحدة، تبين ان اكثر من نصف الرجال فوق سن الـ 40 عاما، والذين لم يتم تشخيص اية امراض لدى اكثريتهم، تعرضوا لاضطراب ضعف الانتصاب. وقد وجدت دراسات اخرى اجريت على مرضى يعالجون في العيادات الجماهيرية، ان نسبة الذين يعانون من ضعف الانتصاب هي نسبة مرتفعة جدا، وذلك بسبب امراض وادوية سنناقشها ادناه.
ليس من عادة المرضى ان يتحدثوا، بشكل عام، مع طبيب العائلة حول اضطرابات الاداء الجنسي، انطلاقا من فرضية تقول بان هذه ليست وظيفته (اختصاصه) وخوفا من المس بصورتهم. كما يخشى الطبيب، هو ايضا، من ايذاء المريض او المس به فلا يساله بصراحة ووضوح عن اضطرابات محتملة في الاداء الجنسي. وهكذا تنشا "مؤامرة صمت" بين المريض وبين الطبيب في ما يخص اضطرابات الاداء الجنسي بشكل عام، واضطرابات الانتصاب، بوجه خاص. ومما لا شك فيه انه يتوجب على طبيب الرعاية الصحية الاولية ان يكون في خدمة مرضاه وان يقدم لهم المساعدة والعون في معالجة هذه الاضطرابات، كجزء من العلاج الشامل.
